2003 Gold 350Z Heavy Clear Coat Correction with some extra surprises

heres a few pics of the car after 3 washes, 3 times clay barring & all prep tapping finished. this car is ready to be sectioned off for a handfull of 50/50 shots. ill try to let the pics do the talking to save some time typing every little step up. the pics will take you from start to finish. i hope you all enjoy reading the writeup when im finished with the car. this will be a big one & it has to be done by monday to make room for another big correction job. on Monday i have another 2 dr black g35 that the customer said has bad swirls & hasnt been detailed in 2 years, he thinks. on wed i have a white c63 amg coming in for a medium correction job.

i try to concentrate on the big jobs that require a lot of heavy machine work since neither of my 2 guys know how to buff & i dont plan to teach them either. my job is to book them as much work as they can handle to keep the shop as busy as possible. they do help me a lot on these big correction jobs. i have them do the prepping & i work side by side with one of them so this way theres 2 sets of eyes checking each panel as im buffing. ill have him follow a few panels behind me with a damp microfiber towel as he inspects the paint a second time under the halogen light after ive already done so. as the panel is being double checked, im already working out the swirls & other defects on the next panel ahead.

we go around the car once during rotary machine compound then do it again for the rotary machine polishing.

after were done polishing the car well remove all masking tape & hose the car off to loosen any dust from the compounding & polishing. then the car gets brought back inside & wiped down with an absorber to remove about 85% of the water. a leaf blower is then walked around the car & the water drips are collected with another absorber towel. me & my guy will go over the car one more time with the halogen light, one holds the small 700 watt unit in his hand while the other guy is looking into the paint to see if weve removed all of the defects 100% or not. if there are still some swirls & scratches left over ill tape the car again & give the car one last round of machine polishing till each panel is completely glassed out to perfection & ready for a coat of sealant then wax.

i wasn't going to put together a writeup but this one has a few surprises. the hood has been resprayed by a body shop. on the passenger half the clear coat seems to have faded a bit. i hope i can pull everything out without going past the clear coat & burning right through. im going to try to save the hood by wetsanding it with 2000 grit. to make the sandpaper soft ill rub 2 pieces of 2000 grit together then soak them in a cold bucket of water with a few drops of soap for lubrication between the paper & the clear coat. if i can save this hood ill save the customer a lot of money that he wouldve spent on the respray. at first i didnt want to wetsand the hood but the customer agreed if i burnt through i wouldnt have to pay for the respray. i over heard his friend who owns a body shop say something like "i dont think he can do it or hes scared to do it but it can be wetsanded". i cant stand when someone doubts me. i didnt want to risk it just in case i did burn through i wouldve ended up doing this entire detail for free then laying out the $ to fix the hood with a respray. thanks to the customers friend he will cover repainting the hood if i should burn through. well see what happens. this should be a fun one.

here are the pictures as of 10:47pm. its getting late & i must leave the shop but im addicted to this little place, i just cant seem to know when to end my day. i hope i can stay awake at the movie theatres tomorrow, if not my girlfiend might be a little mad. im a little nervous because she just signed up for a kick boxing class at her gym =/ hmmm...

I'm pretty confident you'll be able to save that hood after you sand and buff it out. Why did the clear coat fail? Any ideas? Good luck, looks like it's going to be fun and time consuming.

i know i could save the hood but i tried to avoid it. at least i let the customer know the deal. i have full clearance from the owner & his big mouth friend that said hell repaint the hood if i burn through the clear coat.

i have one problem now though, we agreed on a price that didnt include the wetsanding. the customer isnt going to be happy when i give him a call this morning to tell him about the extra work that his friend added to the job.

i dont know why people dont mind theyre own business when theyre in someone elses shop. i wouldnt walk into his body shop & start talking shit to a customer of his about that customers car when its in his body shop & ready for repairs.

now i have to explain to the customer that the cost of wetsanding the hood is worth the price when compared to repainting the entire hood at his freinds body shop. there goes the price we agreed on when the car was dropped off. i dont have to be a hero & do the extra work for free & i dont plan on it neither. ill be a hero when i save the guy the repaint of the hood. if it was something simple like polishing a few wheels then i would throw it in without an extra charge but not this. for me to wetsand the hood, another 5 hours was just added to the job that im already pressed for time since i have another correction job thats being dropped off on monday & a third correction job being dropped off on wed.

if the customer gets mad at me its all good, im going to put his friend on blast anyways.

i finished taping up this car at 10:45pm last night.

i just finished my breakfast a few mins ago with just my warm cappuccino left for me to sip on while i finish up with all my forum work before i start to cut this car.

i like a big challenge but dont like when people put me on the spot, especially talking behind my back & doubting my ability to get the job done. i work under pressure better anyways & i work a little better when im angry as well.

i was sitting at my desk in the middle of replying back to a private message when i heard what was said about me. the guy was standing across the shop & didnt think i would hear him.

i just think the body shop guy doesnt want to paint the hood since the customer wants to put a full body kit on the car. if i save the hood then just the bumpers & skirts need to be painted. if the paint on the hood is shot then the entire nose has to be painted with the hood & both fenders now added to the bumpers & skirts.

you can still see the clear coat isnt 100% crystal clear. this is the best it will be. i wetsanded, compounded & polished the area 3 times. im happy with how it looks at this point. im not going to risk burning through with another round of wetsanding.

looking even better after a few rounds of polishing

How does sanding a car work? How does that not make all the scratches worse? I'm a noob when it comes to advanced detailing.

wetsanding a car is a little tricky to explain. the sandpaper actually makes very fine scratches, actually removing material from the surface. these very fine scratches from the sandpaper actually feather out & even out the deeper scratches. with heavy rotary machine compounding & rotary machine polishing all deep scratches & all wetsanding marks are removed to a perfect finish. when all of these scratches are returned to a high shine that means the area that was wetsanded & surrounding areas are completely flat & level.

hope that helps. i tried to explain it the best that i could.

i could wetsand & compound an area out with my eyes closed, thats how good i am at doing wetsanding lol. its all based on my experience & knowledge that ive used for just about 13 years now. =)

your work is really ridiculous

thank you very much. the car was finished & picked up on friday. i wound up taking 134 pics from start to finish. this was the most pics i ever took of any car that i detailed.

i used to try to keep my writeups somewhere between 25-30 pics tops. it takes a shitload of time to put them together, especialy the typing & story line about the car that was worked on & what was done blah blah blah.

ive taken a different apporach with my next few new threads....more pics & lets typing, let the pictures do the story telling.

stay tuned for a sickass writeup for this car!
